I picked this up at an auction last weekend, super excited to have a 2wd XJ. I’ve been involved with many XJs over the years and they have always been 4wd with an auto. This is a 1998 4.0L 5 speed with 140k on the clock. Super clean all around. Manual windows/doors/and manual cloth seats. Has power mirrors for some reason. It does need a new clutch ($100) and a new windshield ($200) and possibly tires to be a daily driver. Not sure about the red, but it will most likely grow on me. And it has two doors more than it should. Should be a little hot rod.

Wow, that is probably the cleanest Cherokee engine ever!

I know people gush about the Jeep I6 4.0, but it always astounds me that a pushrod engine with non-crossflow heads lasted as long as it did. I mean...2006!

Lasted until 2008 in China. I wish they still made it, its not competitive with modern motors but it’s cheap, reliable, and easy to work on.

Half the reason I bought it, seems like it was really well cared for.

That should be quite a fun little vehicle with 2WD and the 5-speed. I miss mine something fierce.

All great things, but It would be like selling a car with carbs today.

It has to be. I’ve never seen one not covered in quarts of oil.

XJs have a habit of popping up in my life, and that makes me very happy. I haven’t been able to push it at all with the clutch being so weak, but I have high hopes. Maybe some XJ autocross?

It could never be possible to sell an engine like this today, emmisions alone would kill it. But it has a rugged simplicity that is missing from all modern motors, I think that is the appeal.

As a former 91 XJ owner with the 4.0 HO and 5 speed I understand the appeal, but its always stuck me as just odd. I mean even Toyota got out of the I6 game in the Land Cruiser in 98

Jeep has always been a little behind with engines. I lost a lot of interest in the Landcrusier after it dropped the I6. I6s/V12s are my favorite layouts by far.

There have been more than a few before you that have done that. I would suggest some cut front coils, underslung rear springs, and some aftermarket roll bars (they have them, as I had some installed). Makes a world of difference.

Im a big fan of the I6 myself, but to be fair I would trade mine for a 2UZ-FE in a heartbeat. The 1FZ-FE is a great motor, but its also a phenomenal boat anchor.

I’m always inspired by the XJ in Grassroots Motorsports and would consider making a dedicated track car if I had a 2 door.

I did not realize the 1998 Landcruiser was 5000lbs+ before you start adding aftermarket parts and gear. Maybe a v8 for the Landcruiser then.

yeah, I weighed my 97 at 5500 lbs.

Not sure I understand the general concept of a 2WD Jeep but it’s a pretty truck nonetheless.

I think a 5-door track monster could be a thing...

Ignore the Jeep part and think of it as a tall wagon, very useful. If it was a 2 door I would definitely make a track monster

Something’s wrong here... no massive leaks, no hacked up wiring harness, no massive dents, no murder-scene-stained interior... This thing belongs in a fucking museum.

Station wagon that can tow heavy stuff on dirt roads?

Kinja'd!!!0

Why only with a two-door? The Cherokee two-door has the same dimensions as the four-door except the changed B pillar and longer heavier doors. I would think the 4-door might be a bit more rigid.

Kinja'd!!! slipperysallylikespenguins > Party-vi
03/22/2016 at 20:29

Kinja'd!!!0

Mostly because it looks better in my opinion and I’ve always thought the 2 two door weighed just a little bit less ( no idea if thats true). I think you are right that the 4 door is more rigid but that wouldn’t matter much with a cage and subframe connectors.

Kinja'd!!! BJ > slipperysallylikespenguins

Sure, it’s a tall wagon. But in my head, it doesn’t make sense to have a 4x2 Jeep... it’s just somehow unnatural.

Kinja'd!!! slipperysallylikespenguins > BJ

I get that, its more natural than a 2wd Wrangler though.
